Interestingly, the second-most popular DAB+ only station is Coles radio—a station designed to be used in the more than 750 supermarkets that Coles has in the Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide. Listeners can also hear the station as they drive away from the store. Coles radio attracts about 140,000 listeners per week.

The new small scale DAB trial multiplex for London, operated by UDAB, is now testing from one of its two transmission sites in the capital. Once fully launched the multiplex, which is broadcasting on VHF Block 9A will cover Central London out to the A406 North Circular Road and A205 South Circular Road. In the meantime, the test transmissions cover a smaller area.

Klassik Radio to shut down 22 FM frequencies throughout the federal territory from 1 September 2015. This will lead to significant distribution cost savings from 2016. Much like cable operators with the shut down of analogue TV, this signals that the future of radio broadcasting is clearly digital. FM has long been out of date, DAB+ is in many respects superior to analogue, offering clearer sound and possibility to transmit accompanying images.

The latest small-scale DAB trial multiplex has launched – by Celador Radio in Bristol. Ofcom has licensed 10 multiplexes to broadcast for nine months as part of a small-scale trail. Services in Brighton, Portsmouth and Manchester have already launched whilst Cambridge is currently offering test transmissions.
