DAB+ trial planned for Vienna later this year

Before Christmas it is expected that a DAB+ trial will commence in Vienna. Two transmitter sites will be served by SFN. The trial is to remain on air for one year with the possibility of extending the trial for a further year. The objective is to make a transition to regular services in the form of a nationwide roll out from the east to the west of Austria.

2wcom FM-MPX Compact Codec

German firm 2wcom will unveil the FMC01 codec at IBC2013. FlexNsert DAB+ distribution inserter receives a DAB ETI data stream, converts it into a standard MPEG-2-TS-signal and outputs it via ASI or Ethernet transport stream interfaces. The FlexXtract+ DAB+ distribution extractor demodulates a data stream from a DVB-S or DVB-S2 signal and converts the data into a standard ETI-signal according to EN 300799 or EDI-signal according to TS 102 693 to feed DAB or DAB+ transmitters.

Ofcom Explores Potential of Small Scale DAB

Ofcom recently published a paper detailing a study of an experimental DAB multiplex in central Brighton that uses lower-cost technologies. Conducted between Sept. 14, 2012 and Jan. 27, 2013, the privately funded study explored the potential benefits of low cost DAB for smaller areas by looking at the viability of using a wireless transmitter, which was operated under a Non-Operational Test and Development license, to generate a Eureka 147 DAB compliant signal. Additionally, the study analyzed and compared the methods to other multiplexes.

Greens Pledge $27m To Community Radio

While the Federal Government eventually made good on the $1.4 million in funding that community radio needed to ensure the survival of 37 community broadcasters on the digital spectrum, it very nearly signed the death warrant on the community radio sector. It’s a situation that the Australian Greens Party want to ensure never happens again should they be brought into power, today announcing a $27 million pledge to community TV and radio broadcasters.
