Bierhorst at Radiodays Europe 2025: "Broadcast is for broadcasters"

WorldDAB President, Jacqueline Bierhorst spoke at Radiodays Europe 2025 in Athens on 11 March, in a session entitled “Save our Airwaves - DAB+ outlook and experiences.” "I want to talk to you not only about the global growth of DAB+, and how it can re-energise radio; but also why I believe BROADCAST is crucial for BROADCASTERS, Bierhorst said. "That may seem a strange thing to say, or that it’s obvious. But as we near the end of this event, let me explain why I think it’s important that you keep this with you - and that you think about it hard when you’re back in your studios or offices."

Estonian DAB+ frequency licence competition won by Levira

AS Levira submitted an application to the public call for digital radio frequency licences announced by the Consumer Protection and Technical Authority (CTA) in January. After obtaining the frequency licence, Levira will have to build three broadcasting networks within one year. From now on, radio programmes will be available over the air not only on FM frequencies but also in digital radio format, which will enrich the Estonian media landscape. With the first network, Levira will have to cover a minimum of 85.59% of the population (the photo shows what the coverage should look like). The second network must cover 73.45% of the population and the third 72.16%. AS Levira has estimated that the commercial digital radio service will be broadcast from September 2025.

The Consumer Protection and Technical Regulatory Authority of Estonia (TTJA) announced that AS Levira has been selected as the winner of the public tender for digital radio frequency licences (DAB+), which was launched in January 2025. After receiving the frequency licence, Levira must build three DAB+ broadcasting networks within a year. In the future, radio programs will be available over the air in digital radio format, in addition to FM frequencies, further enriching Estonian media landscape. Bauer Media Audio UK announces new Hits Radio and Greatest Hits Radio DAB+ sub brands

The Hits Radio and Greatest Hits Radio brands are growing, as Bauer Media Audio UK announces the launch of four new spin-off stations. As unveiled at the Radiodays Europe conference in Athens on 10 March, Greatest Hits Radio will add Greatest Hits Radio 70s and Greatest Hits Radio 80s to its portfolio, while Hits Radio is launching Hits Radio 90s and Hits Radio 00s. The news follows last year’s successful launch of a number of new Bauer Media spin-off stations on DAB, including KISS Dance, KISSTORY R&B and Greatest Hits Radio 60s, recording a combined weekly reach of over 1.5m listeners in their opening RAJAR survey. The new Hits Radio and Greatest Hits Radio stations will launch on 31st March, the same day that Absolute Radio, KISS, KISSTORY and Magic Radio make the switch to DAB+, as previously announced.

Greece's ERT announces nationwide DAB+ rollout at Radiodays Europe Athens

With 1500 delegates gathered in Athens for Radiodays Europe 2025, the opening session saw Greek public broadcaster ERT announce the nationwide rollout of DAB+ by the end of this year. The organisation’s President, Yannis Papadopoulos, said: “Another strategic goal approved by our board of directors is the nationwide expansion of the DAB+ system. Currently DAB+ operates only in Athens, Thessaloniki and Patras. But by the end of 2025, ERT plans to extend it across the country. This transmission will allow citizens to enjoy even better sound quality and of course a greater variety of stations everywhere.” ERT has recently published a tender for the supply of 19 DAB+ radio transmitters.

These stations will be on the national Digital One multiplex. Nation Radio South adds county-wide Sussex DAB coverage

Nation Radio South is now available on DAB across the countywide Sussex multiplex. After doubling its audience over the past 12 months in Dorset, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and West Sussex, Nation Radio has significantly extended its broadcast footprint into East and central Sussex and taking its potential audience to over 3 million adults across the south. Nation’s founder Jason Bryant said: “RAJAR tells us that Nation Radio is building its audience at pace across the South and our streaming data shows Nation is already making a splash across the Sussex coastal strip of Worthing, Bognor, Littlehampton and Brighton. Our enhanced DAB coverage will mean more listeners in cars, homes and workplaces across Sussex can now hear the south’s Best Variety of Hits.”

mabb updates DAB+ funding programme and extends tender deadlines

At its meeting on 4 March 2025, the Media Council of the Medienanstalt Berlin-Brandenburg (mabb) decided to adjust the DAB+ funding programme and extend the tender deadlines for the funding programme as well as the media law tender for private radio broadcasters. Funding has been increased to a maximum of 70 per cent of the additional costs of almost nationwide programme distribution via channel 10B compared to channel 12D. Funding will be provided over a period of three years. Applications can be submitted until 27 March. In January 2025, mabb announced a funding programme for the first time in parallel with the media law tender to improve the digital terrestrial reach of private radio broadcasters.
