DAB+ to be tested in Ireland this spring

A higher-powered version of the DAB+ broadcast platform is set for a trial in Ireland this spring. FáilteDAB is the name being given to the test that will begin broadcasting in April to eastern portions of Ireland, according to the platform’s website. It will operate under a one-year ComReg DAB+ trial license. The test aims “to provide Irish radio operators and listeners an experience of DAB+ not previously experienced in Ireland,” according to the website. FáilteDAB said it welcomes all Irish Coimisiún na Meán licensed radio operators to participate in the test. Dublin-based Foothold Communications is the operator of FáilteDAB. The company said it has worked with GatesAir and Paneda to supply technology for the network.

Radiodays Europe 2025: meet WorldDAB in Athens

WorldDAB is joining around 1,500 radio professionals in Athens for Radiodays Europe 2025. The event runs from Sunday to Tuesday, 9 to 11 March in the Megaron Athens International Conference Centre. WorldDAB President, Jacqueline Bierhorst features in a session on Tuesday at 13:45 (CET), entitled “Save our Airwaves - DAB+ outlook and experiences.” Jacky will be joined by Nicola Bomio, Head of Radio at CH Media and President of the Association of Swiss Commercial Radio Stations, to explore “the idea that in order to stay independent, proper broadcasting needs to go digital, and that DAB+ is the future.” Members of the WorldDAB Project Office will also be at Radiodays Europe: Bernie O’Neill, Project Director, and Will Jackson, Communications Manager, will be in Athens alongside Jacky for the three-day event.

Radio Spannenburg now also on DAB+ in larger broadcast area

Radio Spannenburg, the regional broadcaster of De Fryske Marren, launched on DAB+ on Tuesday. With the inauguration of the digital successor to FM, Radio Spannenburg's broadcast area has expanded considerably. ‘From today, we can be received on air in a large part of Friesland,’ says broadcasting coordinator Ronald van der Pol. ‘A transmitter has been set up on top of Spannenburg's tower, which means we can be well received via DAB+ in De Fryske Marren as well as in our neighbouring municipality of Súdwest-Fryslân. We can now also be received in places like Sneek, Bolsward, Wommels and Makkum. This is great news for listeners, because you no longer suffer from noise when you leave Radio Spannenburg's FM area.’

New station LA GRANDE MUSIQUE is now broadcasting in PARIS on DAB+

A new classical music radio station has just started broadcasting in Paris and the Ile-de-France region, with a DAB+ frequency, a sign of modernity and listening comfort: LA GRANDE MUSIQUE Radio. ‘I'm delighted that LA GRANDE MUSIQUE has arrived in Paris, making it France's third national classical music radio station. Parisian frequencies are rare and precious, so I am extremely grateful to be able to offer listeners in the capital privileged access to this universal musical heritage: classical music,’ says Emmanuel Rials, founder of the station.Broadcast on DAB+ on the Monaco Côte d'Azur and on FM on the French and Spanish Basque coasts, it has just crossed a new threshold with its entry into the French capital.

CRA can expand DAB+ coverage with green light for 14 more transmitters

Nothing prevents the announced expansion of the coverage of the nationwide radio multiplex B, operated by Czech Radiokomunikace. The Czech Telecommunications Office (CTU) has issued 14 more individual frequency licences to the company. If today, multiplex B covers about half of the Czech population from 17 transmitters, after the launch of the additional 14 sites, more than 80 percent of the population will be able to tune into the network. CRA declares the launch of the new 14 transmitters in March, but has not yet published a specific date. Priority was given to the launch of the regional networks of Play.cz, which has concluded a contract with CRA for the technical operation of the networks and the use of the transmitters.

Worldradio joins DAB+ on Fiera Touch mux

WORLDRADIO announces its entry into DAB+ digital radio broadcasting and has applied for a licence with the Broadcasting Council. After obtaining the licence, it will start its broadcasting on the Fiera touch s.r.o. multiplex. WORLDRADIO profiles itself as a station focusing on cultural and linguistic diversity with the aim of connecting a wide spectrum of listeners and promoting inclusion of national minorities living in the Czech Republic. "We are excited to have WORLDRADIO become part of the modern digital radio network. The partnership with operator Fiera touch Ltd. will allow us to reach new listeners and bring quality content dedicated to cultural diversity. DAB+ is a logical step in our further expansion," said Program Director Gerhard "Gerry" Hadi of WORLDRADIO.

DAB+ tests to go live soon, says Portuguese Secretary of State Carlos Abreu Amorim

Tests to implement the DAB+ system will begin very soon in Portugal. DAB+ is already in operation throughout most of the European Union and allows for better radio reception than the current FM, as well as a longer and more stable range. This guarantee was given at the inauguration of the new governing bodies of the Portuguese Broadcasting Association (APR) by the Deputy Secretary of State for Parliamentary Affairs. Carlos Abreu Amorim also discussed the new package of measures that the government intends to implement for the media sector.

RTI CZ orders DAB systems from Paneda

The Czech Republic is investing heavily in DAB. Several players have now received their permits to build DAB networks, and most have already started their transmissions. One of the larger players is the network operator RTI cz, which has 25 DAB transmitters in operation and plans for a further 8 during the year, in nine different regions, which will offer 80% population coverage. RTI cz has ordered nine DAB multiplexer systems from Paneda, with full redundancy and with a system for inserting dynamic metadata. Paneda has delivered and installed the system, which uses the latest developed platform based on the Docker containerized system, which enables a flexible and scalable platform for RTI.

On 24 February 2025, the ABU DBS 2025 Workshops Day took place at the Wyndham Acmar Hotel, Malaysia. The Innovations in Implementing DAB+ workshop, moderated by Dr. Les Sabel (Chair, WorldDAB APAC Technical Group), covered the latest breakthroughs in digital radio. Expert presentations from Bernie O’Neill (Project Director, WorldDAB), Lindsay Cornell (Chair, WorldDAB Technical Committee), and specialists from Paneda, AVT Audio Video Technologies, GatesAir, Aldena, and RFmondial GmbH provided key insights into best practices, infrastructure advancements, and real-world applications.

Play.cz DAB+ network launches first six transmitters

On Monday 3 March at 10:00, Play.cz launched a new DAB+ multiplex from the first six transmitters covering key areas of the Czech Republic. The network includes transmitters in Prague, Ústí nad Labem, Brno, Ostrava, České Budějovice and Trutnov, each with a power of 10 or 20 kW. Currently, the only programme position in the multiplex is occupied by Radio Relax, which broadcasts at a bitrate of 64 kbps. The launch of this new DAB+ network represents a significant step in the development of digital radio broadcasting in the Czech Republic. The strategic location of the transmitters ensures coverage of major urban areas and important regions, allowing listeners in these locations to access a high-quality digital radio signal.
