Portugal to test DAB+ for two years
15.02.2025 - Portugal Portugal
Portugal will be trialling Digital Audio Broadcast (DAB) for two years. The announcement was made by the Secretary of State for Parliamentary Affairs, Carlos Abreu Amorim as part of World Radio Day, on RUA FM's special broadcast in the Algarve. Carlos Abreu Amorim said that this experiment would be centred on Lisbon and Porto. ‘We're going to see if it has the capacity, if it has legs, and then, of course, everything will be monitored by Anacom and other organisations,’ he said. The Secretary of State pointed to the ‘enormous capacity’ and potential that the DAB could have in the area of Civil Protection and the Ministry of Health, in order to overcome ‘some of the deficiencies that currently exist at FM level’.

HORIZONT: The new DAB+ radios were measured by Radiotest for the first time. How do you assess their market entry in view of the current figures? Roman Gerner: We won't see really valid data until the end of the next six months, as the new DAB+ stations didn't go on air until June 2024 and have therefore not yet had a full year of coverage in the Radiotest. However, it can be said with relative certainty that, based on initial indications, the prospects for positive trends in DAB+ are quite good.
