MENT TV expands into DAB+ radio
23.05.2025 - Belgium Belgium
When MENT TV was founded, it focused on homegrown Flemish talent. Its mission was to strengthen links with the Flemish culture and music industry. The station then broadened its horizon to include an international hit repertoire. With MENT TV already producing TV content with a “radio feeling,” the step to a fully-fledged radio station was evident. “Online radio streaming is not sufficient to build a strong radio brand. We’ve set up a completely new radio station while maintaining the link with our TV channels. TV is limited when there’s no video clip for every song on the playlist. Radio doesn’t face these limitations,” said Marc Hallez, station manager with MENT TV. “We launched MENTpop-radio on 6 January, broadcasting on the 11A DAB+ multiplex, operated by Broadcast Partners.”

Ofcom reports on audio listening in the UK
22.05.2025 - United Kingdom United Kingdom
UK media regulator Ofcom has published its latest research looking at how people in the UK listen to different content and platforms. The findings are based on its 2025 annual Audio and Podcast Surveys, in which it asks people about their use of and attitudes towards different types of audio. "The importance of in-car listening to the radio industry is exemplified by its steady, gradual growth. Just over a quarter of live radio listening took place in cars, vans and lorries in Q1 2025 (26%), up by 4pp in the last decade," the report states. "The majority of this listening (56%) is via DAB, which has been steadily subsuming AM/FM listening in cars as the technology has become more widely available."

Klassik Radio: The digital pioneer will switch off FM in Bavaria in 2026
20.05.2025 - Germany Germany
Klassik Radio is implementing one of the final steps in its digitisation strategy and will bid farewell to FM in Bavaria from 2026. The programme will remain available nationwide via DAB+, via app and web streaming as well as via cable and satellite. Back in 2012, the audio company was the first radio station in Germany to launch this consistently digital approach, which has so far seen over 30 FM frequencies switched off. These voluntary returns are considered a ‘milestone in the digitalisation of radio in Germany’, says Ulrich Kubak, founder and CEO of Klassik Radio. ‘With the current expiry of FM frequency allocations in Bavaria, our home state of Bavaria is finally becoming a pure digital location. That suits Bavaria, that suits us,’ Kubak continues.

The lessons of Spain's blackout for radio's future
19.05.2025 - Spain Spain
Gorka Zumeta reflects on the lessons learned from the events of 28 April: Radio has shown, as a medium, that it is capable of reassuring a frightened country, it is capable of informing when no one else can, and it is capable of bringing light into the darkness. But we must draw from this crisis the main lesson, which is none other than the channel: terrestrial radio, the one transmitted over the airwaves, is the safest in the face of a catastrophe or emergency, in the face of which the internet is weak and defenceless. The blackout on 28 April at 12:33 collapsed the country's entire media system, except for radio. The lack of electricity supply meant that television was useless, and the digital press did not work.
