CRA reports more than 80 stations are broadcasting on DAB+in Australia, with up to 22 DAB+ only stations in each state.There are currently 13 metropolitan multiplexes and two trialregional muxes on air broadcasting nearly 170 servicesbetween them, with each multiplex delivering up to 15 services.

‘Event’ or ‘pop up’ digital radio stations

Australian broadcasters have innovatedwith the use of event or pop up stationswhich are digital stations that existfor a short period of time to allow forflexible niche programming that can highlight an event, afestival or artist. They can be used for generating additionalrevenue, broadcasting emergency service warnings duringfire or floods and also for broadcasting sports or musicevents. For example Elf Radio plays Christmassongs throughout the festive season and theChemist Warehouse station was establishedspecifically for an advertising client.

‘The Main Stage ‘celebrated artists’ like Lady Gaga and Kylie Minogue during their tours of Australia, or ‘Elf Radio’ playing Christmas songs throughout the festive season. ‘The Chemist Warehouse’ station was established specifically for an advertising client and generating new revenue.
