Dance Band Channel broadcasts digitally

22.09.2009 - Teracom AB - Sweden Sweden

This week The Dance Band Channel (Dansbandskanalen), a web radio station, will start broadcasting digitally. The transmissions are a part of a digital radio pilot project. Trials to test digital radio broadcasts will start in autumn 2009. One of the channels to be included in the experiment is the web-based Dance Band Channel. “We look forward to the pilot transmissions and the coming digitalization of radio. It gives us the opportunity to reach our listeners wirelessly in a way that was previously closed to us,” says Daniel Bengtzzon, CEO at The Dance Band Channel. The transmissions are a collaboration between broadcast companies and Teracom. The aim, among other things, is to explore what listeners think about the expanded content and additional services that digital radio offers. The pilot transmissions will also enable broadcast companies to evaluate quality, content and services before an upcoming roll-out of digital radio. Currently Sveriges Radio broadcasts four channels with med DAB+ on the digital pilot network over the Stockholm area. These are SR P2 Musik, SR P3, SR P4 Stockholm and SR Metropol. In addition, five other private radio channels are broadcast digitally - these channels are RIX FM, BANDIT, Radio Deejay, Archipelago Radio and Dance Band Channel. Several more channels will be added before the pilot transmissions begin. When the pilots begin, broadcasts will occur in Gävle and Uppsala in addition to greater Stockholm. These will be able to be received by selected listeners who are part of the pilot transmission. “Our ambition is to show that a significantly bigger and more diverse range of real radio is possible, as opposed to the situation in many places in Sweden today. That is why we are pleased to see that more and more private radio channels chose to participate in the pilot project”, says Lotta Darlin, press officer at Teracom. In a future digital radio network public service, community radio and commercial channels will get more space. The technology that will be used is DAB +. During the autumn, several channels will join the pilot broadcasts.
