Q&A with Fabio Placidi, Technical & Sales Manager at ITEL Elettronica e Telecomunicazioni

ITEL Elettronica e Telecomunicazioni  has recently joined WorldDAB as a member, why have you joined?

ITEL joined WorldDAB to actively participate in the world’s leading Digital Audio Broadcasting community. Our objective is not simply to observe technological evolution, but to contribute to it as an engaged and knowledgeable partner.
Through our long-standing field experience, we believe we can offer tangible value to other members, while at the same time benefiting from the shared expertise within the community. This continuous exchange is essential to our growth and innovation strategy.
We highly value the collaborative spirit within WorldDAB, as well as the opportunity to engage directly with broadcasters during international workshops, which consistently provide meaningful technical and strategic insights.

What market does your company support and what services do you provide?

ITEL supports broadcasters worldwide who require reliable, professional-grade solutions. Our product portfolio includes multiplexers and encoders, but what truly differentiates us is our deep focus on the audio chain.

ITEL was originally founded as a specialist in audio processing for radio and television, and this expertise is fully embedded in our DAB solutions. Our design philosophy is centred on operational continuity under all conditions. For this reason, all our devices support 1+1 or N+1 redundancy configurations.

In addition, we offer a comprehensive range of accessories for our multiplexers, including OCTA, a content server designed for efficient management of logos and EPG data. Most recently, we have introduced the ASA system across our devices, further enhancing performance and reliability.

Can you tell us about your most recent projects?

We remain highly active in the Italian market, while continuing to expand internationally. Among our most recent projects is a significant deployment in Turkey. One of our earliest and most memorable projects was completed in Tunisia, which still holds a special place in our company’s history.
Over the years, we have delivered solutions across numerous regions, including Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, and many other countries. I would like to personally acknowledge and thank our global sales network for enabling these opportunities.
Each project represents not only growth for ITEL, but also a valuable exchange of expertise. We bring our experience to our customers, helping them succeed, while continuously learning from the diverse operational environments in which we work.

What do your customers value most from you?

Our customers consistently value our problem-solving capabilities. Over the years, clients have challenged us with complex and sometimes unconventional requirements. We believe that adaptability is essential—every market has its own unique needs.
In each case, ITEL has demonstrated the ability to respond quickly, effectively, and reliably, delivering tailored solutions that address specific challenges without compromise.

What advice would you give someone considering deploying DAB+?

My first recommendation is to develop a clear, system-level understanding of DAB. Broadcasters should begin by asking two fundamental questions: What do I want to achieve, and what do I actually need?
From there, it is essential to engage with experienced industry specialists to shape the project effectively. DAB is far more than placing multiple radio services on a single RF channel. It involves integration with existing FM networks, ensuring listening continuity, and fully leveraging features such as metadata, EPG, logos, and advanced services.
Understanding these capabilities and planning accordingly allows broadcasters to unlock the full potential of DAB and deliver maximum value to their audiences.
