Launch of Regular DAB+ services

The Agency for Communication Networks and Services of the Republic of Slovenia (AKOS) has issued licences for 13 stations for Slovenia's first DAB+ network. In addition to 4 stations from public broadcaster RTV Slovenia, 9 additional stations were awarded a licence for digital broadcasting. The network has been operational since 19 September 2016 and will initially be powered by 7 medium-power transmitters to cover urban areas and highways.

AKOS had published in June 2016 a tender for radio stations (content providers) for slots in the multiplex. All major radio stations in Slovenia had announced interest in participating.

There are 10 slots available for commercial programmes. Licenses for 4 slots for public radio programmes (by public broadcaster RTV Slovenia) will be issued without public tender (directly by the law). AKOS issued a license for the first regular national T-DAB+ network in Slovenia to the public broadcaster RTV Slovenia which was the only tenderer. Once penetration of DAB+ receivers has increased, additional sites will be installed. If deployed as envisaged, the initial network will cover around 70% of the population of Slovenia.

AKOS is an independent body that regulates and supervises the electronic communications market, manages and supervises the radio frequency spectrum in the Republic of Slovenia, performs tasks in the field of radio and television broadcasting, and regulates and supervises the postal and railway service markets.
