The first DAB trial was launched in 1995 by Antenna Hungária and Hungarian Radio.  It ran until 2008 and covered almost 30% of the population centred around the Budapest area.

In 2008, when the National Communications Authority called for tenders to run digital TV and radio multiplexes, Antenna Hungaria was the successful bidder.  The company then closed its long running DAB trial and began testing DAB+ in the same area early in 2009.

In the past, Antenna Hungaria has also carried out DMB trials and mixed multiplex trials enabling direct comparison of DAB, DAB+ and DMB.

Antenna Hungária rolled out the first phase of the digital terrestrial radio network by December 2008 covering close to 30% of the Hungarian population. Following this the company started a test transmission on its DAB+ network, the trial was available from January 23 2009 in Budapest and its surroundings and included the following programmes from Hungarian Radio MR1, MR2 and MR3 and three channels from the Swiss Satellite Radio (Swiss Jazz, Swiss Classic and Swiss Pop).

The test transmission was broadened in the middle of February 2009 with the programmes from Sláger Rádió and Magyar Katolikus Rádió, by this the number of available channels had risen to eight, ensuring varied choice for the listeners.

Other trials included the Band III DAB trial operating with two transmitter sites in Budapest this has now ceased.  Also at the end of 2007 this network broadcast a DMB trial and in early 2008 mixed multiplex trials have been carried out: these have compared different technologies (DAB, DAB+ and DMB).
