Croatia - Current situation - History

In cooperation with Agency for Electronic Media (media regulator) and HAKOM (frequency regulator) on 15th of November of 2018 OIV (network operator) entered into its second year of the DAB+ trial. With five transmitters within vicinity of the five largest cities in Croatia, coverage stands at 70% of population (3 mil.).

Test broadcasting of digital radio in Croatia started in November 2017 in the presence of the Prime Minister's Envoy, Minister Oleg Butković.

The Electronic Media Council chose 16 existing FM broadcasters for broadcasting in DAB+ technology. The chosen radio stations are, as follows:  Radio 808, Radio  Kaj, Sjeverni  FM, Radio Koprivnica, Radio Istra, Antena radio, Radio Zabok, Narodni radio, Radio Dalmacija , GOLD FM, Radio Banovina, Enter Zagreb, Trend radio, Radio Martin, Soundset Trsat and Radio 10.

In November 2019, network operator (OIV) and collaborating regulatory agencies decided to continue the existing DAB+ broadcast trial for a third year running. Some of the existing services on the trial were switched, and it was announced that public broadcaster HRT had joining the trial. It was also decided that the network will be extended from current five to eight sites.

With five transmitters within vicinity of the five largest cities in Croatia, coverage is now extended to 70% of population (3 mil.).

The Electronic Media Council opened a public call for expression of interest for programme licences in DAB+ technology for the western part of Croatia, for a trial period one year.

Test broadcasting of digital radio in Croatia started 20 November in the presence of the Prime Minister's Envoy, Minister Oleg Butković.

On the transmitters object Sljeme, located near the Capital of Zagreb, in the presence of the Envoy of the President of the Government of the Republic of Croatia, the Minister of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure, Mr Oleg Butković ceremonially launched the test phase of 12 months for the broadcast of digital radio in the Republic of Croatia.

Among other guests, this important event was attended by the representatives of the Croatian Regulatory Authority for Network Industries (HAKOM)  Dražen Lučić and Mario Weber, as well as the representatives of the Agency for Electronic Media (AEM) Robert Tomljenović and Davor Marić.

Minister Oleg Butković declared that more than two million listeners in the Republic of Croatia would be able to receive new digital radio signals  without interference, with more programmes and content.
