WorldDAB Summit 2024

WorldDAB’s flagship conference is taking place in the beautiful city of Zagreb, Croatia on Thursday 14 November 2024 09:00-15:30 (CET) Add to Calendar.

The WorldDAB Summit 2024 will explore how DAB+ can energise radio. You'll hear from experts representing all aspects of digital radio: broadcast, automotive and receiver manufacturers, as well as leaders from around the world in programming, creative content and marketing.

Get updates on the global growth of DAB+ and learn more about the latest technological developments, including the new Automatic Safety Alerts (ASA) and inspiring creative initiatives. There’ll also be plenty of opportunities for discussion and networking throughout the day.

Aradhna Tayal Leach is a strategic consultant and leader in media, events and engagement. She brings together extensive experience in the media, arts and technology sectors, with a passion for industry development to better reflect, represent and influence society.

Aradhna is Managing Director of The Radio Academy, the UK charity to support and celebrate excellence in audio. She is also Director of Radio TechCon, the UK’s audio and radio technology conference.

Formerly at the BBC and through her consultancy Clockhouse Media, Aradhna has led events, initiatives and strategies across the creative industries. Her portfolio includes BBC Shorts, OKRE Summit, Creative Cities Convention, the Film and TV Charity, the Worldwide Association for Women Journalists and Writers, AudioUK, Sadler’s Wells and the National Theatre.

A former trustee of The Radio Academy, Aradhna was awarded their Fellowship in 2020 for her services to audio. She is trustee of WAC Arts, committee member of the Royal Television Society, London and former Chair of the Jury for their student awards.

Jacqueline Bierhorst, Project Director Digital Radio Netherlands

Jacqueline Bierhorst
President, WorldDAB, and Project Director, Digital Radio NL

Jacqueline Bierhorst has been a pioneer in commercial radio since 1987, specialised in distribution, marketing, and content. She has a strong track record in launching and leading successful commercial television and radio channels in The Netherlands and Belgium. From 2011 until 2015 she was project leader on the roll out of the DAB+ network in The Netherlands and since 2015 she is project director Digital Radio NL, a collaboration between public and commercial broadcasters and the Ministry of Economic Affairs coordinating involvement of all stakeholders and joint marketing of Digital Radio. Bierhorst is owner of Jacky B Entertainment Solutions, Vice President of WorldDAB, a member of the WorldDAB Steering Board and an active ambassador of digital radio throughout Europe. She is also a consultant to the Flemish Government, Department of Culture, Youth and Media for the introduction of DAB+ in Flanders, initiating collaboration throughout the Flemish stakeholders on digital radio and country manager Radioplayer Netherlands.

Lindsay Cornell
Chair, WorldDAB Technical Committee, and Principal Systems Architect, BBC Digital

Lindsay Cornell has worked for the BBC for more than 30 years, in a variety of engineering, editorial and leadership roles spanning radio, TV, and spectrum regulation. He has considerable experience in leading collaborative projects through his roles as Chairman of CEPT FM PT51, dealing with spectrum issues for programme-making, and as Chairman of the WorldDAB Technical Committee, managing the stability and development of the standard.

Luka Duric
Vice President, AER – Association of European Radios EEIG

Luka Duric, born in Zagreb, holds an MBA. He worked at Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation as Deputy Manager for Croatia and Slovenia, and later as Spokesperson and Advisor to the Croatian President. Currently, he runs a consulting firm, is VP of the European Commercial Radio Association, and Director of the Croatian Radio Forum.

Hervé Godechot
Board Member, Arcom

Hervé Godechot joined the CSA in February 2019. A graduate of the Tours School of Journalism, he became a journalist and reporter for the regional stations of France 3 in Rennes, Nancy, Le Mans and for the France Outre-Mer network (1988-1994). He then joined the national editorial staff of France 3 as a reporter, then a senior reporter in the General Information department, then in the Economy and Social department from 1995. He was head of the Economy and Social department at France 3 (2000-2006), before be appointed editor-in-chief of the national editions of the television news, 12/13 and 19/20 (2006-2016). From 2016, he became editor-in-chief of the Economy and Social service common to France 2 and France 3, editorialist and columnist for France 3 and France Info TV, on which he also presents Eco Week. Since January 2019, Hervé Godechot has been editor-in-chief of special operations and columnist on France Info TV. Hervé Godechot chairs the Arcom “Radios and digital audio” working group. He is also vice-president of the “Publishing and distribution of on-demand television and audiovisual media services” working group.

Tomas Granryd

Tomas Granryd has been working for Swedish Radio for more than 20 years, holding various positions such as hosting, producing, and commissioning radio. For the last 5 years, he has been the head of digital partnerships, leading the work around the presence of Radio and Swedish Radio in connected cars. Tomas is also the Vice Chair of the Digital Committee at the EBU.

Phil Kesby
Domain Architect – BBC Architecture, Arqiva

Phil Kesby is a chartered Engineer with over 25 years of experience designing and delivering broadcast systems for AM, FM, DAB and DTT, continuing to innovate and develop these technologies to enable optimised deployment for broadcasters, network operators and consumers. Phil has led the development of new approaches for the reduction of energy consumption in terrestrial broadcast platforms for the BBC and Arqiva. He is a member of the World DAB Technical committee, and a member of the DVB steering board. Phil is vice-chairperson for the ETSI committee defining harmonised standards for broadcast transmitters and receivers (ERM TG-17). Phil received his Bachelor of Engineering degree from the University of Leicester (UK).

Edita Kudlácová
Head of Radio, EBUEBU

Edita Kudlácová is the Head of Radio at the European Broadcasting Union. She works with public service as well as wider radio industry on advocacy for radio, especially focusing on distribution via connected dashboard. With the relevant international committees and professional groups, she has been developing work around live radio, relation of radio and podcasting, providing space to share, network and learn for senior audio makers and radio creatives, and also looking at innovation happening in the radio world today. Prior to joining EBU, she worked at Czech Radio where she set up the innovation team and developed a number of projects using new technology and innovating around audio content.

Bernie O’Neill
Project Director, WorldDAB

Bernie O’Neill is an experienced people connector within the digital radio industry, Bernie has headed WorldDAB since 2011, with overall responsibility for the direction and management of WorldDAB activities. Together with her team and the global network of WorldDAB members she works to further the adoption and implementation of DAB+, the digital successor of FM radio.  With a background in leadership of international trade associations for over 25 years, her career expands over several industries including radio, ICT, water and education. She is an expert at driving business development, delivering value to stakeholders, strategically aligning teams, and developing effective marketing communications. Trained in international business, she has held postings in London, Brussels, and The Hague.

Adriano Pitteri
Project Manager, SRG SSR

Adriano Pitteri is Program Manager for the Broadcast Distribution at SRG SSR, the Swiss Public Broadcaster. In this role, he coordinates the strategy and implementation of SRG SSR's DAB+, FM and satellite broadcasting. Adriano is member of the SRG SSR’s DSO steering committee and also chairs the SRG SSR's coordination group for digital switchover communication. This includes coordinating the marketing campaign for the Swiss public broadcaster.

Nick Pitts
Content Director of Jazz FM and Magic Classical, Bauer Audio UK

Nick Pitts has been part of the radio and audio landscape for over 30 years, ranging from BBC national to launching small scale and DAB, via award winning big London breakfast shows and national commercial radio.  Nick was responsible for producing, creating imaging and leading for some of the UKs largest groups of the day. He is an innovative and creative leader in the specialist music radio world.  He is currently Content Director of Jazz FM and Magic Classical at Bauer Audio UK.  Nick has been part of the furniture of Jazz FM since it’s digital relaunch in 2008 on DAB, with a journey from producer to board member when the brand was sold to Bauer Media, where he was part of the sale process and oversaw the integration into the new owner.  He also has responsibility for leading the globally respected Jazz FM Awards and created and led its 30th Anniversary “Established 1990” initiative and is also a trustee and Vice Chair of the UK’s Radio Academy.

Gregor Pötzsch

Pötzsch is a digital radio native as Product Owner @Cariad entertainment, smart functions and gaming dev team. He is driving the Digital Radio Entertainment Future @Cariad for Volkswagen Group. Together with WorldDAB, RadioDNS and Radioplayer he connects the Broadcast Community with the Automotive World.

Hanns Wolter
Technical Director, DAB Italia and Chair, WorldDAB Spectrum and Network Implementation Committee

Hanns has been working in the DAB world since 2000 as a Product Manager and has, in these years worked on all issues regarding DAB, at both a national and international level, including the introduction of DAB+ in 2007. He is involved in network planning and spectrum issues and also works closely with hardware manufacturers for the deployment of a comprehensive DAB environment. Currently, he is responsible for the planning and management of the ongoing roll-out of DAB Italia’s network and all issues related to the creation, distribution and transmission of the multiplex.

Mr Carsten Zorger
Director, Digitalradio Büro Deutschland

Zorger is the Director of the German DAB+ digital radio marketing body - Digitalradio Büro Deutschland which oversees the marketing and promotion of DAB+ digital radio in Germany. Prior to this, he was head of marketing and communications at the German national radio broadcaster, Deutschlandradio. Previously, he was head of public relations at the Berlin-Brandenburg branch of ADAC, the German automobile association. He was responsible for corporate communications at ISP Strato AG, one of the world's largest web-hosting companies. He has extensive experience in the radio industry, having been chief editor and director of audio and internet at SWR3 Börsenman and managing editor at BLR in Bavaria.

Zagreb is the capital and largest city of Croatia, a country in Southeast Europe that borders the Adriatic Sea and the Balkans.

Below are a few attractions that the WorldDAB team are getting excited about:

Zagreb is famous for its museums and art galleries. One of the must-visit museums in the city is the Mimara Museum, home to over 3,700 pieces, including works by famous artists such as Rembrandt, Van Dyck, and Monet.

Tesla Technical Museum Nikola Tesla shows the development and application of technological advances. Along with its permanent display, it features special exhibits such as the Planetarium, the Apisarium, the Mine, and the Nikola Tesla study.

The Sljeme Tower is the visual trademark of Medvednica Mountain and the highest point with panoramic views of the entire city and the Zagreb highlands.  The Sljeme Tower is approx. 45 minutes outside of the city.

The French regulator, Arcom has published its White Paper on Radio. Hervé Godechot, member of Arcom and President of its "Radio and digital audio" working group, will explore the important proposals. He’ll explain the plan to move to predominantly digital broadcasting by the end of 2033, and the rapid growth of DAB+ across France.

Switchover is happening here and now. The north German state of Schleswig-Holstein is starting a move to DAB+, with the switch completed by mid-2031 at the latest. And in Switzerland, the public broadcaster SRG SSR will switch off its FM broadcasts by the end of this year. Learn how and why these radio markets are making the switch.

After several years of uncertainty, Spain is now moving towards a digital broadcast future that will ensure that public radio remains a key feature of the digital media landscape. So far this year, public broadcaster RTVE has launched DAB+ in several cities across Spain with the aim of providing 50% population coverage by the end of tye year. . A new technical plan that will accommodate both public and private radio broadcasters will be essential for the rollout of DAB+ across Spain.

From content to brand, German Radio group Axel Springer has a plan how DAB+ fits into one of the most successful radio groups in Germany. Christoph Falke will give an overview of the group and the stations within it, how DAB+ helps them reach new and niche audiences, plus how DAB+ fits with their hybrid radio strategy and what the future plans are to push broadcast radio through content and brand extensions.

Belgium’s French-speaking radio industry joined together to facilitate a digital distribution of radio, with DAB+ at the heart of a multiplatform hybrid strategy. RTBF together with the main private radio stations created maRadio.be, a digital radio alliance promoting DAB+ in Belgium’s French-speaking regions. Their approach has ensured the successful implementation and promotion of DAB+ and provides an excellent template for our industry.

DAB+ saving lives

Earlier this WorldDAB and Digitalradio Deutschland e.V. announced the launch of the "Automatic Safety Alert (ASA)" system after two years of intensive collaboration. This pioneering innovation in DAB+ digital radio technology aims to protect the public during emergencies by delivering reliable safety alerts without requiring an internet connection. Listeners will benefit from a system that alerts them even if mobile or internet connections are disrupted. ASA operates automatically in the background, can be regionally adjusted for the location, and boasts high resilience thanks to the robust DAB+ radio transmission network. By mid-2025, new generations of DAB+ radios will support the ASA standard. Find out how the system was successfully tested as part of Germany’s national “Warntag” warning day.
