Over 17 million digital radios have now been sold in the UK. According to GfK Q2 2013, digital radio device sales are up 12% year on year compared to a decrease of 18% for analogue devices. There are hundreds of digital radio products on the market in the UK being sold through a large number of high street and online retailers as well as most of the big electrical chains. Latest Q3 GfK digital radio sales data released shows that digital radio sales were up 10.6% in the quarter to September 2012. 

There are hundreds of digital radio products on the market in the UK being sold through a large number of high street and online retailers as well as most of the big electrical chains. Digital radio in-car continues to grow in the UK with the announcement that one third of new cars (33 .3%) now has digital radio available as standard or as an option (Q4 2012 CAP/SMMT) .Marketing of in-car digital radio has increased, with the industry campaign continuing across commercial radio, BBC TV and radio, national press and online. The heavyweight campaign, featuring digital radio evangelist D Love, is designed to spread the love for digital radio. The digital radio logo is being used in all print, media and on BBC TV. Digital Radio UK (DRUK) is working with all of the automotive brands in the UK on technical specifications for in-car receivers and an approved installer scheme which was also part of the Government criteria for a smooth transition to digital. The IMI launched an equivalent installer accreditation at the Drive 2 Digital conference in November 2012 .

A Service Following trial using the new DAB/DAB+ Service Following specification produced by the WorldDMB Technical Committee was carried out. This allowed automotive manufacturers to test Service Following on their receivers. Consumer research is carried out on a regular basis giving information to manufacturers on what the UK driver expects from their in-car digital radio experience .

• 33.3% of new vehicles have digital radio as standard (Q4 2012), up from 20.8% the previous year (Q4 2011) and 7.5% in Q4 2010 (CAP/SMMT).

• 54% of new vehicles make digital radio available as standard or an option.

• According to GfK 2012 sales of digital radio car adapters has increased by +37% compared with 2011.

• Following on from announcements from Ford and Vauxhall, as of January 2013 all new BMWs have digital radio as standard

  • The Isle of Wight Festival is covered on Absolute Radio (13-16 June) and the Glasgow Mela on BBC Asian Network (15-16 June).
  • The US Golf Open (10-16 June), test cricket and the British Grand Prix are on Radio 5 Live (28-30 June).
  • Of course there’s the BBC’s coverage of Glastonbury on Radio 1Xtra and BBC Radio 6 Music in addition to BBC Radio 1 and 2 (26-30 June) and coverage of all the stages online.
  • Wimbledon starts on 24 June and the Tour de France starts on 29 June, both on Radio 5 live Sports Extra.

June: Digital Radio Campaign

  • The next phase of the industry communications campaign started the first week in June with 6 new radio ads featuring D Love celebrating the ‘sweet sweet sounds of summer’ which run until the end of the month - listen to the ads here
  • Two of the executions focus on the great value of digital radio (‘Box of Joy’ and ‘Sweet Smell’) and two feature Fathers’ Day messages (Fathers’ Day is on 16 June).
  • Cars are also a big focus with two ads (‘Hit the Road’ and ‘I Love’) running throughout the campaign.
  • The campaign will run across commercial radio stations including Global, Bauer, Real and Smooth, Absolute Radio and many digital-only stations.
  • We are also supplying digital radio guides [image below] to retailers including John Lewis.

July/August:

  • Phase two of the summer digital radio campaign will feature D Love on BBC TV and radio trails and commercial radio ads in July/August.
  • D Love will be encouraging advocates of digital radio to share their love for digital radio with their friends. We will let you know further details nearer the time.

D Love has also been nominated for the Marketing Award at the prestigious Arqiva Commercial Radio awards: we will hear more on 3 July.
