Sales of digital radios continue to increase. Official data released for Q3 2012 show sales of 94,655, according to the GfK Marketscope report, bringing the total number of DAB+ digital radios sold since August 2009 to 1,002,966. In vehicles, Toyota, Lexus and Hino include DAB+ as standard in a range of vehicle models. BMW, Audi, Land Rover and Mercedes have DAB+ as an option. Many mobile phones include FM radio and radio stations have created apps to enable listeners to listen to AM, FM and DAB+ stations via streaming. CRA is working to ensure that, just as for FM, a DAB+ chip will become standard in mobile phones to enable listeners to access all stations via DAB+ free to air broadcast.

Premium audio brands in Australia Bose and Bang & Olufsen both now offer DAB+ options. There are now more than 140 DAB+ devices available. The latest DAB+ radios include colour touch screen, slideshow and interactivity via Wi-Fi connection.CRA will continue to work with the receiver retailers and manufacturers to promote the category on radio to stimulate sales in key retail periods.

Commercial Radio Australia (CRA) has released four new radio ads promoting digital radio as the ideal Mother’s Day gift.
Produced by radio specialist agency Eardrum, the series of four 30 second ads feature different shoppers and their questionable motivation for buying mum a digital radio.

The radio campaign which begins this week on high rotation for three weeks, across 42 commercial radio stations in the five digital radio metropolitan markets of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, features a bonus offer of an Endota Spa massage voucher worth $60, when purchasing a selected digital radio from JB Hi-Fi.

Commercial Radio Australia chief executive officer, Joan Warner said: “Digital radio sales in the Mother’s Day quarter have nearly doubled since the first Mother’s Day campaign was launched in 2010 and we hope with this excellent JB Hi-Fi offer the upward trend will continue.”
