Q&A with Diane Fuller, Sales Director, Roberts Radio

What markets does your company support and what solutions do you provide?

Roberts have been designing and engineering audio products in England since 1932. Most of our products are portable, made to be carried and enjoyed both inside and outside. We have a distinctive aesthetic and eye-catching product design that is personified by the Revival range.

Radio has been at the heart of everything the brand has achieved, from producing quality radios that are used by the UK Royal Household to offering competitive digital radios, used daily by thousands of UK citizens. The Brand has evolved to become a household name, endeavouring to push the boundaries of technology with Smart radio, high quality audio systems and turntables.

Roberts is perceived as a traditional British brand, but we are also investing in Europe and look forward to increasing our brand presence in Europe.

Can you tell us about your most recent projects?

It has been a testing time over the last few months and the Covid 19 pandemic has hit everyone very hard, but we have remained positive and our projects will continue. We will be launching new products in the next couple of months and will endeavour to maximise our products and messaging in the market.

We are evolving as a Brand, having recently undertaken an in-depth brand study, to understand our customer and ensure that we are producing products that are ‘wanted and desired’ by our Customer. The brand values are at our core with original designs and products that have style and substance.

We are also conducting in-depth consumer groups to understand the requirements of the Consumer and will produce products and solutions to ensure that the Roberts brand continues to be viable for the next 80 years!

What do your customers value most from your solutions?

Having undertaken the in-depth consumer study, it was fascinating to see how the UK consumer perceives the Roberts brand. We obviously had our own opinions about our Brand and the reason why we resonate with our consumer, however, we have used the data from the study to help define our values:

  • Originality – we are proud to offer distinctive designs that help define our brand;
  • Craft – our exceptional team knows what exceptional looks and sounds like, and their expertise enables us to create products that have style and substance;
  • Forward-thinking – to stay in tune with the needs of modern listeners
  • Sustainability – to ensure that all areas of our business are sustainable for the future

We know that everyone does not want an invisible device that sits in the corner. That is why Roberts create products with personality and designs that look, feel and sound great.

What advice would you give someone considering deploying DAB?

An interesting question, in that the question should be more about what the customer wants and desires and therefore to produce products that satisfy the need of the consumer. It is up to the industry to ensure the continuing desirability to the consumer ie continue to deliver great content and manufacturers need to deliver products that enhance the lives of the consumer.

To put that into context, radio is a fantastic medium and delivers much joy to many people, however, it is seen as a medium that satisfies the ‘older population’ and not the ‘millennial generation’. At Roberts, we see our customer base as cross generational – the reason we believe our products appeal in this way is that we take the innovation of the technology eg DAB and deliver desirable product like Revival.

Our most treasured comments from our customers, ‘We just love your Revival’ with a smile on their face.
