On 7 April 2026, Lithuania's Ministry of Transport and Communications announced it was launching the rollout of DAB+ digital radio.

It says: "Lithuania is one of the few European Union countries where radio is still broadcast exclusively on FM frequencies, but this is set to change soon—the Ministry of Transport and Communications is launching the rollout of DAB+ digital radio. This will not only ensure higher sound quality and lower electricity costs, but will also create an effective critical infrastructure for information transmission during crises."

“Today, we still encounter situations where radio broadcasts cut out while driving, the connection is lost, or station selection becomes limited in remote areas. We want to eliminate this—ensuring high-quality sound and more content everywhere. Furthermore, digital radio allows us not only to transmit sound but also to reach listeners with important messages, so that we can reach people immediately during emergencies or crises,” says Minister J. Taminskas.

The Ministry notes that: "It is estimated that by 2030, there will be approximately 177,000 cars on Lithuanian roads capable of receiving digital signals, which will provide a solid foundation for the growth of the digital radio audience."

One DAB service was introduced in 2001 in Vilnius with coverage of around 20% of the population of Lithania. The transmissions of 6 programmes of both public and licenced commercial broadcasters were on-air in parallel to FM services. DAB channel 13A was used. It continued operation until 2009 and then was switched off.

A 500W transmitter was installed in Vilnius and covered an area of approximately 30km (about 20% of the population).
