Q&A with Joseph D'Angelo, Senior Vice President, XPERI

What markets does your company support and what solutions do you provide?

Xperi Corporation offers a vast array of platforms and services to broadcasters around the world, including streaming smartphone applications (Apps), our most widely offered solution.  We currently support thousands of radio stations with Apps that include smart speaker, smart TV, as well as advanced automotive integrations. In addition, our RAPID platform is deployed alongside DAB+ implementations in most DAB+ markets delivering critical data services capabilities.  In North America, more than 2,500 radio stations have implemented our HD Radio broadcast solution and listeners can enjoy superior audio-visual radio experiences in 70 million vehicles to date.

Can you tell us about your most recent projects?

As DAB+ expansion continues across Europe, our All in Media division has deployed our RAPID platform to many of the largest multiplex operations.  For example, Arqiva utilizes RAPID to deliver DAB+ Logo Services in the UK; in Norway, P4, Bauer and NRK have deployed RAPID for DLS and Logo Services.

What do your customers value most from your solutions?

The tremendous success and momentum behind the DAB+ rollout in Europe have provided broadcasters with the opportunity to enhance their programming and services to fully leverage DAB+’s capabilities.  The RAPID platform was developed in close collaboration with broadcasters and has kept pace with the evolution of the DAB+ standard and associated services. For broadcasters, RAPID is a highly reliable, scalable, and affordable platform with a long track record of flawless operations.

What advice would you give someone considering deploying DAB?

The EECC’s recent mandate for Digital Radio in cars means that more drivers than ever will be able to enjoy the services and user experience that DAB+ delivers.  This provides a unique opportunity for broadcasters to leverage the metadata (text and image) capabilities of DAB+ to deliver a rich, multi-media, engaging user experience in the car.  Broadcasters should absolutely allocate resources and capacity to deliver accurate and compelling metadata alongside their DAB+ audio services.
