RTI and Czech Radio Pilsen are hosting a day devoted to digital radio. The event aims to educate visitors about the benefits of DAB+, the DAB+ receivers currently on the market and the first mobile phone with DAB+.

Over 140 industry professionals from 20 different countries joined the DAB+ workshop at ABU DBS this year, discussing the progress of DAB+ in the region, hybrid radio, the business case for implementing DAB+ and the benefits of DAB+ in smartphones. Titled ‘DAB+ expansion in Asia Pacific’, the WorldDAB workshop also featured three breakout sessions, during which delegates discussed key aspects of DAB+ rollout: regulation, technology and developing new content.

After the presentation of the action plan for the further development of DAB+ in Germany by the Digital Radio Board of the Federal Government and the federal states are firmly committed to the success of DAB+.

The pop up radio station Radio 2 Country has returned to the airwaves and is available via digital radio and online. Lewis Carnie, Head of BBC Radio 2, says: “We’re excited to be bringing back the pop-up on DAB. This digital service will showcase the very best the genre has to offer."

The ORF broadcasting subsidiary ORS is currently exploring the operation of digital radio with interested radio stations. Two tenders of the Austrian Communications Authority for local, regional and nationwide terrestrial multiplex platforms for digital terrestrial broadcasting in the standard DAB+ are the basis for this.

The Digital Radio Board of the Federal Government and the federal states are firmly committed to the success of DAB+ in Germany. At the 'DAB+ in dialogue' event this week Dorothee Bär, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) outlined how the current digital radio roadmap provides a good backbone for the roll out of DAB+ throughout Germany.

It's just over a week left until Radio Days Europe. This year, Norway's digital switchover will be in focus in several ways, Marius Lillelien from NRK and Kenneth Andresen, P4 are speakers in a session dubbed: "First shut down of FM DAB+. How did it go?"

Mike Hill, Managing Director of Radioplayer reflects on the impact that Radioplayer Car will have on the radio industry. The commercial radio sector and BBC has invested in Radioplayer Car, the world’s first voice-controlled radio adaptor that automatically switches between DAB, FM or streaming to locate and provide the best radio listening experience for drivers.

DAB offers significant opportunities for private broadcasters and many are already reaping the benefits. The mantra for all radio broadcasters should be to collaborate on technology and compete on content. For those watching and waiting, now is the time to get involved.
