Belfast-based station U105 has gone digital and launched across Northern Ireland to a catchment of more than 1.5 million. Station Director, Peter McVerry, said it was an historic day for the station: “Access to digital sets and an improved transmitter network across Northern Ireland meant the time is now right for U105 to go onto DAB.”

According to the Bayerische Landeszentrale für neue Medien (BLM), five applications were submitted to the tender for transmission capacities in the nationwide DAB+ radio service in Bavaria. These are the programs egoFM, RadioArabella, RadioTEDDY, RTT in the mix and the STAR FM.

Media Broadcast is adding four additional national DAB+ transmission sites to its nationwide DAB+ digital radio network in Germany. The Wittenberg DAB+ site in Saxony-Anhalt, is now settling in to its new channel after it officially moved on June 30, improving reception in the Wittenberg and Dessau areas.

Wireless Group’s Belfast-based station U105 has gone on to digital radio for the first time this week. It’s been on FM since launching in November 2005, but has now gone Northern Ireland-wide on the country’s DAB multiplex.

Just in time for the summer get-away, ARD and Deutschlandradio have expanded the DAB+ transmitter networks in the holiday regions of Germany. DAB+ is now available in most north and east coastal spots, the Bavarian Alps, the Bavarian Forest, the Bodensee region and the Black Forest.

After six months without nationwide FM broadcasts in parts of the country, surveys show that listeners remain loyal to radio “Digitisation provides more radio channels across the country. This gives the listeners more channels to choose from, and will secure radio as a strong and relevant medium in the years to come,” says Ole Jørgen Torvmark, CEO of Digitalradio Norway.
