With the final expansion stage in 2017, the station network is now growing to a total of 120 transmitter locations and once again provides a clear boost in supply. For example, MEDIA BROADCAST, operator of the Germany-wide multiplex in the DAB + standard, will commission further locations in Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Bavaria.

Following extensive trials of DAB+ in Australian regional capital cities Canberra and Darwin since 2010, applications opened on Nov. 21 for one permanent license in each city, according to radioinfo.com.au.

Throughout Switzerland, the radio systems will be expanded into the motorway tunnel for DAB+ digital radio reception. In the area of northeastern Switzerland, this already applies to almost half of all tunnels.

Between changing standards and opposition from national private radio groups, DAB+ has struggled to take shape. The situation could however change: the CSA has just announced an acceleration of the deployment schedule of digital radio in France. (subscription only)

Radio broadcasters are adapting well to how digital channels are changing the industry, turning mobile phones and the Internet into a way to extend their brands, protect their listener share, and reach new audiences.

For private radio stations, the question arises as to whether FM's success and business model can be translated into the digital future, and how digital radio DAB+ can become what FM currently is: the main source of revenue.

Just in time for the Christmas trade, ARD, Deutschlandradio, private providers and other members of the Digitalradio Deutschland association are once again promoting the digital radio standard DAB+ for four weeks from November 27th and thus the joy of listening to the radio. The slogan of the third nationwide campaign this year is "Give a DAB+ Radio".
