Italian public broadcast Rai announced that it intends to accelerate its investments in digital radio broadcasting at a recent digital radio conference held at the broadcaster’s headquarters in Rome on April 13.

The Minister of Communications and Mass Communications of the Russian Federation, Nikolai Nikiforov, held a meeting on 17 April in Moscow of the State Commission for Radio Frequencies (GKRC) during which the possibility of deploying DAB+ was discussed, where appropriate and dependent on availability of spectrum. Relevant regulation and licensing measures would also be required.

French media regulator CSA has approved seven multiplexes for Lille, Dunkirk and Calais earlier this month, with services starting from 19 June.

According to Pure representative Rob Haycock, no German-speaking country has digital radio been so successfully established over the past few months as it has been in Switzerland. This is confirmed by the latest figures from OFCOM stating that 600,000 DAB+ radios were sold last year.

The trend towards digital radio usage is driven mainly by DAB+. DAB+ currently stands at 34% and has gained 11% of use since autumn 2015. In all age groups, DAB+ has developed faster than IP radio.

According to OFCOM's six-monthly surveys conducted by the GfK research institute, electronics stores sold 304,000 DAB+ radios in 2017. 290,000 vehicles were either already equipped of a DAB+ device or have been after their circulation. The number of vehicles equipped with DAB+ car radios in a standard way has risen sharply, from 66% at the end of 2016 to 85% a year later.

According to figures from OFCOM, 3.5 million devices are currently in circulation in Switzerland. In addition, there were 290,000 vehicles that were equipped with a DAB+ device or retrofitted with it.
