For listeners in the coverage area of the Inntal/Ebbs transmitter near Kiefersfelden, the FM frequencies for five BR radio stations will change from 21 July: Bayern 1, Bayern 2, Bayern 3, BR Klassik and BR24. In future, the BR will broadcast these programmes exclusively via DAB+ from the Inntal/Ebbs site. They can still be received via FM on the frequencies of the Wendelstein transmitter. The reason for this is the decommissioning of the Inntal/Ebbs FM transmitter for economic reasons and to improve energy efficiency in broadcasting. The municipalities of Kiefersfelden and Oberaudorf, which were previously also served by the transmitter via FM, will still be able to receive the BR’s FM programmes via the Wendelstein transmitter.

Belgium

The Flemish Parliament approved the radio decree proposed by Flemish Minister for Media Cieltje Van Achter. This marks a further step for Flanders towards a modern radio landscape, with clear rules for DAB+ and a framework for the ongoing digital transition of radio. With the new decree, Minister Van Achter aims to ensure fair and clear rules, both for traditional FM radio and for DAB+. This means that clear procedures for allocating frequencies will also be introduced for digital radio, and licences will be granted for nine years, just as they are for FM. Importantly, local radio stations will now also have the opportunity to broadcast on DAB+.

Reliable signal distribution is essential for every broadcaster. For Christian Milling and the team at Milling Broadcast Services, the challenge was to build a distribution network that not only delivers high quality audio, but also remains flexible in the event of technical failures. As part of a project for the Lower Saxony State Media Authority, Milling Broadcast Services delivers the audio signals of 11 non commercial local and community radio stations from their individual studios to the central handover point in Usingen. From there, the DAB+ platform operator distributes the signals into the respective multiplexes. Instead of following a conventional workflow, the team chose a different approach.

France

Announced in April 2025 and approved by the Government and ARCOM, Radio France’s plan to reorganise its FM frequencies will come into effect on 22 July 2026. Decided in the wake of the vote on the 2026 budget, which provided for an additional €4.1 million in savings for Radio France, this change involves seizing the opportunity presented by the roll-out of DAB+ in France to reduce the historic FM network by 12 per cent and thereby achieve annual savings of €3.9 million. It has also been designed to further certain objectives of the public service broadcasting sector, namely to encourage listeners to adopt DAB+ for radio listening, to improve access to information in crisis situations, and to ensure wider access to children’s programmes for families.

When the sun rises, the people of Bavaria will wake up to a new radio station: CHILLOUT ANTENNE Bayern launches on 7 July, on DAB+ with a fresh sound for Bavaria – and promises: “Everything in the flow”. Following audience surveys over the past few weeks – the station had only been awarded the licence by the Media Commission of the Bavarian State Office for New Media at the beginning of May – the sound has now been finalised: CHILLOUT ANTENNE Bayern is focusing on a modern electronic mix of pop dance and house. Deep house, chill house, melodic house and organic house characterise the programme. Via DAB+, the new programme reaches around 9.6 million people in Upper Bavaria, Swabia, Middle Franconia and Upper Franconia.

David Fernández Quijada, co-founder and research director at South 180 writes: Broadcast versus online is a frequent debate within the radio industry. But it is a false one. Broadcast is not a relic but rather a core infrastructure that provides what online platforms cannot: Universal reach, resilience and instant, free public access. Although streaming is growing and online listening is part of radio’s future, online delivery cannot replace terrestrial broadcasting. Online depends on data networks, devices, apps and platform ecosystems that can fail, fragment and exclude people. Broadcast radio does not have those limitations. This is why analog and digital broadcasts remain essential to the sector’s future.

Radio WOMAD will broadcast on DAB for the first time during this year’s WOMAD festival. The station will be available across Bath, West Wiltshire and Swindon, alongside its existing 87.7 FM festival service and Mixcloud Live stream for listeners elsewhere in the world. It’s on from 22-27th July 2026. Radio WOMAD says the additional DAB transmission follows work by the team over a long period and will give festivalgoers another way to hear travel updates, event information, interviews, live sessions and music as they travel towards Neston Park.

The FM frequency 93.6 MHz in Erlangen will be switched off on 30 June, Radio Energy has announced. The station is encouraging its listeners to switch to digital broadcasting. Communication with listeners is primarily focused on the switch to DAB+. As part of this, the station is highlighting the standard’s typical advantages, such as crystal-clear sound quality and uninterrupted reception whilst driving. Radio Energy is supporting the frequency change with an on-air promotion. Through a prize draw, the station is currently giving away DAB+ radios to selected members of its audience in order to further boost hardware penetration within its coverage area.

RED ZAC is now an official member of Verein Digitalradio Österreich, with DAB+ radio sets for the home and the car available at its 200 locations. “DAB+ has quite clearly reached the mass market,” emphasises RED ZAC board member Thomas Pöcheim. “The roll-out of DAB+ in Austria is part of a Europe-wide trend; at RED ZAC, customers can get the right devices for it.” The growing market for digital radio is already evident in the figures: more than 1.44 million people across all age groups listen to the radio via DAB+. More than 60 stations are already available via DAB+. “We are delighted to have gained a new, important member in our association in the form of RED ZAC,” says Roman Gerner, Chairman of Verein Digitalradio Österreich.
