The significant changes that have taken place at ERT in recent years were presented today, Saturday 5 September 2026 at the company’s stand at the 90th Thessaloniki International Fair, highlighting the impressive progress of public service broadcasting in the new digital era. The roll-out of DAB+ digital radio, which already covers 78 per cent of Greece and to which ERT’s radio stations have now joined, made a particular impression. The new network offers listeners high-quality sound, a stable reception even whilst on the move, and the ability to broadcast digital information.

DAB+ safety alerts on the radio: Test your own ASA radio on Safety Awareness Day in September
DAB+ has been available in Germany for 15 years now. The digital radio service is now being enhanced with a new feature designed to warn of dangers in future and thus contribute to greater safety. The so-called Automatic Safety Alert (ASA) is entering its roll-out phase nationwide via the DAB+ network. ASA complements the existing German warning system, which comprises sirens, apps and cell broadcasts via mobile phones. The National Warning Day on 10 September from 11.00 am offers the ideal opportunity to test your own ASA-certified radio at home. The device can be set up for this in just a few simple steps.

Rai steps up its DAB+ rollout: Ferrara is now connected too, and digital coverage is expanding across Emilia and the Lower Veneto region
Rai’s DAB+ network expansion programme continues, with new installations making the coverage of public digital radio across Italy increasingly widespread. In the last few hours, the new transmitter in Ferrara has also come into operation, from the site in Via Aranova, on channel 7C, further improving reception in the Emilia region and parts of southern Veneto. This initiative forms part of the wider project to extend the DAB+ network being carried out by Rai Way on behalf of Rai. The target set for the end of 2026 is to reach 275 installations and cover over 85 per cent of the population.

Revitalising targeted radio broadcasting: the Bundeswehr modernises the transmission facilities of the Bundeswehr’s Operational Communications Centre
Even in the digital age, radio remains important to the Bundeswehr. This capability of the Bundeswehr is to be maintained and expanded in the coming years. To this end, the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Use of the Bundeswehr has commissioned the Bremen-based company FHF Flurfördergeräte GmbH to carry out a comprehensive refurbishment (modernisation) of the transmission cabins. The Bundeswehr’s mobile radio transmitters consist of transmission cabins, equipment teams, power generators and a mobile 25-metre antenna. Over the next few years, the ageing transmission cabins are also to be refurbished and housed in containers. As part of the modernisation, transmissions will in future not only take place in the FM frequency band, but will also utilise digital and, at the same time, more efficient Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB+) for the transmission of information.

Nostalgie+ kicks off the new season with DAB+, new programmes and podcasts
As the first 100 per cent DAB+ radio station in French-speaking Belgium, Nostalgie+ is heading into the 26–27 season with 55,000 daily listeners and a 1.5 per cent market share. Aimed at the over-55s and focusing on the 1960s and 1970s, the station is expanding its programming with three new shows and continuing to develop its digital offering through its app, website and podcasts.

In a crisis, radio still saves lives – Here’s why that matters
Sitting in the audience at Radiodays Asia in Jakarta today, listening to broadcasters and technology leaders discuss the role of radio during emergencies, I couldn’t help but think back to Victoria’s devastating bushfire season earlier this year. The session, Broadcasting Through Crisis: How Radio Saves Lives, brought together representatives from WorldDAB, Thailand’s digital radio rollout and Australia’s own ACE Radio Network. Much of the discussion focused on emerging technologies such as DAB+ Emergency Warning Systems, capable of waking radios from standby mode and delivering targeted warnings to specific geographic areas.

RADIO BOB! launches on regional DAB+ multiplexes in Hesse
RADIO BOB! has expanded its digital terrestrial coverage in its home market of Hesse. Since 1 September, the station has been broadcast via the regional DAB+ multiplexes in North and South Hesse, in addition to its existing FM coverage. The legal basis for this was established by the Hesse Media Authority’s assembly when it allocated the relevant transmission capacity last June. The nationwide broadcast via the first national DAB+ multiplex, through which the station can still be received across the whole country, remains unaffected by the regional launch. By moving onto the Hessian regional multiplexes, the station is expanding its technical reach within the federal state and improving its digital visibility at a regional level.

RAS adopts guidelines and programme for 2026–2029
The new Board of Directors of the South Tyrol Broadcasting Corporation (RAS), chaired by Vera Malleier, has approved the guidelines and programme for the years 2026 to 2029. The focus is on modernising the radio and television networks, expanding shared transmission sites, improving mobile phone coverage in remote areas, and enhancing the security of strategic transmission infrastructure. RAS broadcasts 22 television and 39 radio channels and achieves a coverage rate of 99.6 per cent. In the coming years, the television networks are to be switched over to DVB-T2 and HEVC, and the roll-out of DAB+ digital radio is to continue.

LGBTQ+ station Radio Q will launch in the Czech Republic and plans to switch to DAB+ next year
From 9 September at 9.00 am, the Czech media landscape will be expanded by a new project in the form of Radio Q. It will be the first Czech radio station aimed at the LGBTQ+ community and listeners seeking unbiased content. The station will be available exclusively online for the first few months, with plans to launch on the DAB+ platform next year. The operator is even talking about plans for nationwide coverage.
