European digital radio markets came together recently to announce support for the newly published ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) Euro standard for DAB digital radio. This standard has been agreed as the Minimum Specification for DAB digital radio receivers across Europe and is supported by WorldDAB and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), as well as broadcasters and manufacturers in Germany, the UK, Norway, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium and Italy.

The WorldDAB session at IBC2017 examined market progress and the DSO process in Norway. During the session, Patrick Hannon, President of WorldDAB, reconfirming his request to the European Union authorities to stop the sale of analogue radio receivers in Europe.

The WorldDAB stand was busy with interest from new markets in the Middle East, Gulf States and Asia Pacific. We also met with broadcasters, regulators and interested parties from across Europe, who wanted to find out more about how DAB+ is being used around the world. The momentum behind DAB+ was the topic of a conference session on Monday morning, covering DAB+ progress around the world with a focus on Norway’s digital switchover (DSO), the importance of radio and its role in the car.

By the end of the year, the closure of the FM network for NRK and the commercial channels will be completed. That does not necessarily mean you have to get rid of the car radio you have today just because it only supports FM.
