Digital Radio UK and the automotive industry today welcomed Ofcom’s advertisement for the second national commercial network of radio stations on DAB. The launch of Digital Two could provide the capacity for over 15 further national radio stations and lead to the launch of new digital-only stations.

Now 94.4% of the British population can receive digital radio signals via the 19 million digital radios currently used in the United Kingdom, according to the BBC. The transmitters are located in Whitworth Valley, Slapton in Devon, Swanage, Sudbury, Todmorden in West Yorkshire, Hay-on-Wye and the market town of Dolgellau in North West Wales, bringing the total to 253.

A set of new test routes for car manufacturers have been put into place until the end of the year, which enables receiver manufacturers to ensure that their DAB sets are performing as they should. These test routes have been set up by Digital Radio UK, Arqiva and Global Radio.

Switzerland

A number of broad-range DAB+ platforms have been established in the Berne-Fribourg, northern Switzerland and eastern Switzerland regions since the end of 2012. Two more private radio stations were thus able to commence operations in early July: Radio Basilisk and Radio 32. This means that over half of all VHF programmes can now be heard via DAB+.
