Digital radio represents half of all radio listening with a 50.2% share, according to the latest Rajar results for the second quarter of 2018. In an average week, digital listening accounts for 510 million hours; DAB has a 72% share of digital listening hours.

Digital listening has increased year on year to 50.2% share, up from 48.7% in Q2 2017, according to RAJAR Q2 2018 data released on Thursday. Overall digital listening hours grew by 1.3% or 6.4 million hours compared to Q2 2017, while DAB digital radio listening grew by 3.3% to account for 36.3% of all radio listening and 72.3% of all digital listening.

France

The French broadcast regulator the Conseil Superieur de l’audiovisuel has launched a call for DAB+ applications at the national level for the first time, with the initial focus on developing services in the metropolitan regions of Brittany and Corsica and its surrounding highways. The tender is aimed at only national radio stations, and requires 90% of the motorway network to be covered within eight years, as well as 80% of Brittany, and 80% of Corsica’s territorial routes and 75% of its metropolitan population. The final date for submissions is 21 November.

The Aftermarket Devices Working Group (ADWG) brings together broadcasters, device and antenna manufacturers, plus experts from the automotive industry, in an important collaboration for digital radio in the car.

WorldDAB has announced the programme for its conference session at IBC, ‘Radio’s Digital Strategy’, taking place on Monday 17 September from 09:00-10:30. Moderated by Lindsay Cornell from the BBC, Radio’s Digital Strategy is the only session dedicated to radio in the IBC conference programme.
