Swiss digital-only station Radio Swiss Classic now available in three languages On Monday the 26th of January, Switzerland’s first classical music-only station with French animation was launched on digital radio DAB in the Western parts of the country. At the same time, a new German-only version of the same station was introduced in German-speaking Switzerland. The two new channels substitute the former bilingual version of Swiss Public Broadcaster SRG’s classical music-only station Radio Swiss Classic. The newborn French-spoken “Radio Suisse Classique” aims to answer the needs of Switzerland’s second biggest language group, the French-speaking population. It thus completes Radio Swiss Classic’s offer of the already existing Radio Svizzera Classica for the Italian-speakers, and the newly launched German-only version adressing the largest Swiss language group, the German-speaking population. All three channels are broadcast exclusively on digital radio: Radio Suisse Classique forms part of the DAB multiplex in Suisse romande, whereas Radio Swiss Classic in German is included on both the DAB multiplex in German-speaking Switzerland and the recently launched DAB+ multiplex in Grisons. Radio Svizzera Classica can be heard on DAB throughout the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland. With these recent additions, the digital radio offer in Switzerland now consists of 20 different brands by Swiss public broadcaster SRG SSR idée suisse. A digital radio listener will receive some 10 to 15 different services, depending on the region, and those living along the language borders are covered by two multiplexes.
