Joseph (Joe) D’Angelo, Senior Vice President, Radio, Xperi

How do you see the digital radio industry evolving in the coming years?

Digital Radio, and DAB+ specifically, has never been growing faster that is in 2019.  More and more DAB+ services are coming on-air around the world and auto makers are meeting those services with an increasing number of line-fit DAB+ vehicles.  This is a great trend that I expect will continue to accelerate for the foreseeable future as we transition accelerates.  For many years, there was uncertainty around the future of digital broadcasting, but as technologies have developed and broadcasters have made clear their commitments; HD Radio in North America and DAB+ in Europe, Asia and Australia, car companies and radio suppliers have been able to innovate and ensure cost effective global platforms were available for all radio markets.   The support of the EU has also proven a significant milestone and we are seeing more and more legislation supporting a rapid transition to DAB+.

What DAB+ products or services are showcasing at IBC 2019?

Xperi is a global radio technology company and we will be showcasing three technologies:

  1. RAPID, from our UK based division, All in Media, which is a world class metadata production platform for DAB+.  Used by leading broadcasters throughout Europe, Asia and Australia, it enables broadcaster to produce and distribute critical metadata for DAB+ services.
  2. DTS Connected Radio, which is a global hybrid radio platform that we have been developing, testing and certifying with broadcasters and car companies over the last 24 months.  This system provides a truly global hybrid radio experience for car manufactures and ensures a rich, consistent user experience in over 60 countries.  We have designed this system with the support of leading broadcasters and technology suppliers to ensure that broadcasters are in total control of the hybrid radio user experience and can deliver an extremely enriched and affordable service to car companies around the world.  Commercial vehicles will begin shipping next year and will support all broadcast standards around the world; DAB+, HD Radio and legacy analog services.
  3. App, again from our UK based division, All in Media, are a strong part of our business that will be on display.  We currently develop apps for some of the leading broadcasters in Europe and aggregators like Radioplayer and Commercial Radio Australia’s Radioapp.  Close to 6,000 stations are available on apps developed and supported by Xperi/All in Media.
