In his blog, WorldDAB President, Patrick Hannon writes about the significant developments of DAB digital radio technology in Germany and Belgium over the past sixth months.

The software developer console Labs, launched its new hybrid DAB + app for Android smartphones with integrated DAB+ chip on Swiss Radio Day 2016. With the app, the user can listen to their favorite DAB+ stations and simultaneously listen to other content such as podcasts or internet radio. The app is initially available in Germany, Austria, UK and Norway.

On 29 August, Deutschlandradio and ARD are devoting a day of radio programmes focusing on the future of digital radio. Throughout the day there will be special interviews and features exploring the latest developments in digital radio.

Digital radio forecasts remain strong. In Europe, digital radio, particularly DAB is making serious headway.

The first nationwide licensed LGBT radio station lulu.fm, will start broadcasting via DAB+ on October 1, 2016.

The ARD stand (Hall 2.2) at IFA this year will have a "Digital Radio Lounge" where visitors will be able to experience the range of radio stations available via DAB digital radio. Visitors will also be able to find out more about TPEG emergency warning systems.

Around 235,000 DAB+ radios were sold in the first half of 2016 in Switzerland. There are now some 2.6 million digital radios in households and vehicles across the country.
