Mobile TV Goes International Two major organizations within broadcasted mobile television have now joined forces in order to better coordinate and promote initiatives around the world. This follows a fast growth in the usage of DMB (Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) as a standard for mobile TV and radio on five continents. DMB Alliance is a Korean organization which focuses on supporting global deployment of DMB by sharing experiences and providing end-to-end solutions. It counts 37 members. International DMB Advancement Group (IDAG) has 13 members from 11 countries in Europe and South East Asia. IDAGs main focuses are on content, additional services, business models and increasing the terminal market. “By combining competence, knowledge and forces, our two organizations will stimulate and create a mass market for terminals and services across the world,” President of DMB Alliance Dr. Dae-Ung Kim says. DMB is a European technology that Korean companies have helped improve and make mainstream. It also includes digital radio (DAB and DAB+) something that is especially important in the European and Australian markets. The two organizations also work to combine DMB with other distribution networks such as 3G and WLAN to ensure interactivity and video on demand functionalities. “We are happy to be able to boost the DMB activities across borders at a time when the technology is gaining support due to its flexibility and extreme cost effectiveness,” Mr. Gunnar Garfors says. He is President of IDAG. DMB services are running in Korea, Norway, Ghana, Italy, China, Poland and Malaysia, while a number of countries including Great Britain, Germany, Egypt, Indonesia and Ireland have tested the technology. Other countries such as the Netherlands, Malta, Hong Kong and Vietnam will launch commercial services early next year. A number of countries i.e. Australia, France, Canada and Mexico are currently using the technology for radio services.
