MiniTV and DMB on the Rise

MiniTV is making an impact four months after being launched by Norwegian Mobile TV Corporation (NMTV). Sales of devices are skyrocketing and one importer reported selling out its first shipment after less than two weeks. NMTV will be available to demonstrate MiniTV during IFA in Berlin and IBC in Amsterdam. Eight DMB receiver models are retailing from the big electronics retail stores in the Oslo region, but also from 200 convenience stores (i.e. 7 Eleven, Narvesen) and petrol stations (including Shell and Statoil). The untraditional retail strategy increases visibility and makes access to devices a lot easier. The rapid uptake of DMB services across continents shows that emphasizing on content, additional services and freedom of choice on the device side is a winning combination, Gunnar Garfors says. He is CEO of NMTV and President of IDAG. MiniTV was launched by the Norwegian Mobile TV Corporation (NMTV), a joint venture between the three largest broadcasters in Norway: The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK), TV 2 and Modern Times Group (MTG). The TV channels on offer from NMTV are NRK1, NRK2, NRK3, TV 2, TV 2 News 24 and Viasat TV 3. 15 DAB digital radio channels can also be received by all DMB handsets, giving an impressive channel offering. Additional services providing interactivity, traffic information and on-demand programmes are also under development. International DMB Advancement Group (IDAG) of which NMTV is a member, does furthermore expect to increase its membership to include companies from over 10 countries on three continents. During IBC in Amsterdam IDAG will also have an information meeting to which press, potential new members and other interest organizations are invited. Companies from Poland, Ireland, Switzerland, Malaysia, Vietnam and Ghana are among those that are expected to join IDAGs current lineup of seven companies from France, Italy, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Malta and Norway.
